This article is part of What Are You Reading?, a series designed to connect readers to people in the community and books they are currently reading. Participants are chosen at random for the interviews in which they share their latest reads with you, the reader.

BIG RAPIDS — Andy and Fran Kantar know a world of adventure awaits in every book, a fact which is abundantly clear in the nonfiction books the two currently are reading.

Fran is working her way through “Kabloona,” authored by French adventurer Gontran de Poncins.

PIONEER: What is this book about? Why did you decide to pick it up?

FRAN: It’s a historical account of this man’s visit to the Arctic. I decided to read it because I like nonfiction and realistic accounts of survival and indigenous people.

You’re not done yet, but do you have a favorite part of the book so far?

My favorite part has been the description of Inuit life.

Would you recommend “Kabloona” to anyone else?

Yes, absolutely. It gives you insight into a completely different life.

While Fran has been reading about the travels of de Poncins, her husband, Andy, has been spending his time reading “South Pole,” written by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen.

The book chronicles Amundsen’s successful expedition to reach the geographic South Pole and the trials his team experienced along the way.

PIONEER: Why have you enjoyed this book so far?

ANDY: I’m interested in the stories of explorers and survival, and the fact that this was his own story made it extremely personal. My favorite part was learning about the stories of each member on the expedition team.

Would you recommend this book to someone looking for something new to read?

Yes, it’s quite long, about 600 pages, but it’s riveting. It’s a fascinating story of survival.
