BIG RAPIDS — It was a special game for the Crossroads Charter ACademy girls soccer team.

The Cougars celebrated Parents and Senior Night with a 6-1 win over Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Friday at CCA.

“The goals came for us today,” head coach Josh Yrick said. “It’s a situation that I wanted to go full-time. It was nice to have everyone on the same page as far as that goes.”

“We came in here ready to get a win,” sophomore Triston Murray said. “We were all pumped up. We wanted to send our seniors out with a win.”

Everyone was able to see the field for Crossroads. Sophomores Leah Davis and Allie Angell tallied two goals apiece and Angell assisted on Davis’ two goals. Senior Sam Taylor and sophomore Lily McDonald scored as well.

The Cougars led 5-1 at halftime.

“We knew that we had to come out strong,” said freshman Jessica Cole, who tallied an assist in the game. “We did a good job of sharing the ball more.”

Many girls were able to see more playing time than usual and some girls were able to play in different positions than usual. Triston Murray — CCA’s starting goalkeeper — was able to play on offense for the first time this season.

“I was hoping to get a chance to play out on the feel,” Murray said. “I was so excited. I always watch these girls but being up there in the action with them was a lot of fun.”

While a goal eluded her grasp, experiencing the game from a different angle was enjoyable.

“In goal, I’m waiting for the play to come to me. I’m in a defensive mindset. Up here, you want to just run. I have to be more aware of where my players are and where my forwards were. It took a lot more hustle, too.”

McDonald scored her second goal of the season and was looking to set her teammates up for success as well.

“I was so happy,” she said. “I really wanted one. When I got it, it felt really good. I kept sending through balls to all of them because I wanted everyone to score.”

The Cougars will face Eagles Tuesday at Burt Lake.
