Pine River sweeps Houghton Lake to lead area roundup

Pine River wins two

LEROY — Pine River defeated Houghton Lake 13-0 and 2-0 on Thursday. Hunter Poe was the winning pitcher in the first game and allowed no hits and six strikeouts. He was 3-for-3 at the plate with a double and three RBIs. Lane Ruppert and Kris Green both pitched three innings in the second game and combined on a 2-hitter. Luke Hill had a single and an RBI.

Pine River’s regular season record ends at 24-8.

Big Rapids loses two

Big Rapids fell to 18-11 and 8-5 in the CSAA Gold with 13-3 and 15-1 losses at Fremont on Thursday.

Keaton Ballard took the loss in the first game, and was relieved by Caleb Blondia and Cam Clark. Jace Gray had two hits while Craven Bird had a double and Elliott Blair had a double and two RBIs. Connor Kinnally and Ian Wood also had two hits.

Big Rapids only had four hits the second game including one for Gray who scored the only run. Kinnally was the losing pitcher. Mason and Clark also pitched.

“We played about as bad as we could play,” Big Rapids coach Sam Daugherty said. “We did not hit well, we didn’t pitch well and our defense was terrible. I’m not sure why. We have to get better defensively for next Tuesday.”

Big Rapids plays at Traverse City West on Friday and home against Cedar Springs in a predistrict game on Tuesday.

SOFTBALL

Reed City wins two

REEF CITY — Reed City’s girls softball team took 11-4 and 13-1 nonleague wins over Lake City on Thursday.

Maddie Morgan was the winning pitcher. Lily Andres had three hits while Kamryn Myers, Morgan, Veronica Lofquist, Cassie Enos, Riley Shafer and Mia Peterson had one apiece.

Lofquist was the winning pitcher in the second game. She went five innings and allowed six runs on eight hits struck out six and walked two.

Myers had three hits while Morgan, Lofquist and Shafer had two apiece. Lilly Andres, Alaina Stein, Adeline Wirick. Peterson and Angelina Pudvan had one apiece.

Reed City is 14-16 and plays at the Portland Invitational on Saturday.

Big Rapids sweeps Fremont

FREMONT — The Cardinals defeated the Packers 13-2 in game one and 14-7 in game two on Thursday.

Maddison Affer had two doubles and three RBIs and Annah Folkema, Jaylynn Gray, Emma Daum, and Olivia Teceno each had one hit and one RBI.

Kelby Strpko earned the win on the mound, striking out three while giving up three hits and zero earned runs in five innings.

In game two, Affer had two hits and two RBIs, Madison Hamilton had one hit and two RBIs, Gray had one hit and two RBIs, Abby Gallinger had one hit and one RBI, and Teceno added two hits.

Strpko struck out one and gave up just one earned run and three hits in four innings.

Big Rapids (14-13) hosts Grant in predistrict action on Tuesday.

Shepherd sweeps Chippewa Hills

SHEPHERD — Shepherd swept Chippewa Hills 6-0 and 3-2 in nonleague play on Thursday.

The Warriors made four errors and only had one hit in he first game with a single for Mercedez Sorsen.

Macy Blanzy was the losing pitcher.

Shepherd scored a winning run in the top of the 11th in the second game. Izzy Guiterrez and Sydney Wright had two hits apiece. Mya Koepf took the loss, allowing one run on six hits and striking out eight.
