6-year-old killed after being struck by pickup

REED CITY — A 6-year-old boy from Evart was killed after being struck by a pickup truck hauling logs in Sylvan Township, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office deputies said.

The incident occurred at 10:02 a.m. Monday, near the intersection of M-66 and 7 Mile Road, according to OCSO Detective George Pratt. The detective said the pickup driver, who was traveling southbound on M-66, saw two young children standing at the shoulder of the road, when suddenly one darted out to the road. The driver attempted to avoid the child but was unable.

The 6-year-old, whom Pratt declined to identify, died on the scene.

The incident is under investigation, Pratt said, but alcohol and speed are not believed to have been a factor in the crash.

The OSCO was assisted by the Evart Police Department and Fire Rescue, Michigan State Police, Osceola County EMS and the Garfield Township Fire Rescue.
