BALDWIN — Two members of Baldwin’s softball team have earned honorable mention honors from the West Michigan D League, Panther athletic director Scott Pedigo has announced.

Pitcher Cierra Pieske and cacher Jazlynn Johnson both received honors for the Panthers.

The Baldwin softball team folded late in the year for lack of numbers.

But Johnson joined the baseball team and played second base the last few weeks of the season.

“The boys needed help so I decided, why not play my last few senior games with them,” Johnson said.

She’s been playing second base and has also had two RBIs.

It didn’t take Johnson long to realize the difference between facing a softball pitch vs. baseball.

“It’s hard because the baseball comes at you faster,” she said. “It’s a smaller ball. It took me awhile (to adjust).”

Johnson is a senior and said she’s had fun. She’s been accepted by the boys as a baseball player.

Pieske saw pitching action this season for Baldwin’s softball team as a freshman. Her experience has been limited but she’s been focusing on it during practice, she said.

Keeping the ball in or near the strike zone will be a main objective for Pieske.

“I’m going to try throwing it fast,” she said going into the season.
