LEROY — Lane Ruppert is expecting a busy summer. So are a lot of area athletes.

Ruppert and other teammates were in the Pine River pressbox on Monday to get fitted for helmets as the Bucks were getting ready for summer camps and scrimmages. Other area football teams were doing the same.

“We had our first day of camp and did drills and defensive work,” Bucks coach Terry Martin, said on Monday. “We’re doing helmet handouts today. They’ll have them this summer for all the camps they attend. That will be the same helmet they wear going into the season.”

The Bucks, like other teams, will have various sessions during the summer and then open practices on Aug. 12. The season kicks off on Aug. 29 at Kalkaska.

Ruppert is a three-sport athlete so he was expecting to stay exceptionally busy with football, basketball and baseball.

On Monday, “we worked on our defense as well as offense,” Ruppert, a cornerback, said. “Our first day was on our defense. We work on positions.”

Baseball and baskeball will also have summer schedules.

“Lane was our shortstop all year and No. 3 pitcher,” coach Shawn Ruppert said. “He did a great job of getting us going as our leadoff hitter. He’s a very good base runner and thinker of the game.”

Ruppert batted .380 with 24 walks, 35 hits, four doubles, four triples, one homer 18 RBIs and 32 steals. He was 3-1 as a pitcher with 3.08 ERA and was all-conference and all district.
