Coyotes turn up intensity with blocking camps

Austin Fowler

REED CITY — Two-way Reed City lineman Austin Fowler has been through it before and he’s happily going through it again.

Fowler was among the nearly 50 participants earlier this week to a Reed City blocking camp.

It’s another full summer of football at Reed City. The Coyotes again are doing the Gladiator training on Sunday nights. Blocking camps are July 15th and 17th.  Skills camp will be July 21-25.

“It’s not going too bad,” Fowler said on Monday. “We have quite a few people showing up, which is good. The blocking camp focuses more on fundamentals and taking small steps and getting repetitions.”

Fowler is also a wrestler and points out Reed City has open mat times on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week during the summer.

The work pays off during the summer, especially for football, Fowler said.

“We would definitely not have a chance to go (eight) consecutive years (with a league title) without the summer stuff,” he said.

Coach Monty Price left for Belding, and assistant Scott Shankel is now head coach. But the coaching staff still looks very familiar to Fowler and other players.

“I don’t think it’s going to be that a much of a change,” Fowler said.

Shankel and his assistants continue to be busy at the camps working with experienced varsity players and newcomers.

“Let’s have at it,” he told his veterans on Monday. “We’ve got some young guys here and show them how to do things right.”
