Michigan Youth Leadership Academy students clean up Hemlock Park

Participants of the Michigan Youth Leadership Academy spent Thursday morning picking up trash in Hemlock Park in Big Rapids. The academy is a program hosted by the Michigan State Police and local law enforcement which is designed to foster leadership and life skills in local 14- and 15-year-old boys currently attending school within Mecosta and Osceola counties. Students graduated from the course during a ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Mecosta Osceola Intermediate School District Career Center. Big Rapids Department of Public Safety officer Lorne Juday, who assisted with the leadership academy during the past week, said learning community service and volunteerism was an important part of the academy.
