Reed City volleyball focuses on open gyms

Reed City players work out.

REED CITY — The beginning of volleyball practices is Aug. 14, less than a month away. And teams like Reed City have been having open gyms to get ready.

Reed City coach Don Patterson had an open gym on Tuesday to work with volleyball players as the season draws near.

“We’ve been going on Tuesdays pretty much all summer long starting actually before school got out,” Patterson said. “We’ve had about 13 to 15.”

Most were high school players with some middle school athletes also participating.

Middle school volleyball will be in the fall for the first time, Patterson noted. It’s usually been in the winter.

“It will be a stress on equipment, officials and other things,” Patterson said about fall middle school volleyball. Having it in the winter also gave him a chance to have more hands on work with middle school players, Patterson pointed out.

There will be also open gyms on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, Patterson said.

“Once we get into the first week of August, we have another dead period and the tryouts on the 14th,” he said. “Then we go into a normal schedule.”
