REED CITY — Reed City’s Payton Hansen put in good summer’s worth of work on the baseball diamond, but he hasn’t been stopping there.

Now the attention switches to football.

Hansen had some key contributions during the summer for the Quad City Storm.

The Storm’s season ended with a 6-4 loss on Sunday at Win Kellum Field in 18U action.

“I played last year with them too,” Hansen said. “We had a lot of good talent on our team, played a lot of good teams and got better as the season went on.”

For the Reed City spring team, Hansen batted .312 with an on-base percentage of .450, two home runs and 22 RBI, plus 22 runs scored.

He had a field percentage of .958.

“He got a win on the mound against Gaylord St Mary’s, the 2019 D4 state runnerup, striking out 10,” Reed City coach Marty Shaffer said. “He ended up being the catalyst on offense and defense. He caught in all but four of our games. He batted in our 3 or 4 hole in our lineup and had the second highest batting average on the team.”

Hansen and Jeffrey Samuels were two Reed City players on the Storm team.

“I wanted to hit faster pitching and play a wider variety of positions on the field,” Hansen said.

For Reed City during the spring high school season, Hansen was an all-CSAA Gold division choice.

“I want to keep my average up and hit for some more power,” he said.

Hansen also plays Reed City football and basketball and has has a busy summer.

“It’s basically with football right now,” he said.

The Coyotes have a new head skipper with former assistant coach Scott Shankel, but Hansen and others have indicated there hasn’t been much change in what they’ve seen from the previous staff when Monty Price, now at Belding, was skipper.
