REED CITY, CHASE — Riders are getting ready to saddle up for the 9th annual Ride for a Cure event at D Bar D Ranch, Sept. 14.

With funds providing needed programming support to Spectrum Health’s Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center in Reed City, there will be something for everyone.

“We’re so appreciative,” said Jen Ames, practice manager of the Susan P. Wheatlake Regional Cancer Center. “Ride for a Cure has grown into such an amazing event, and we join the ranch staff in inviting everyone to enjoy the fun and contribute to this great cause.”

Last year, a record $28,622 was raised, as 152 horses were registered and more than 200 cowpokes of all ages joined together for a pig roast dinner Saturday night.

This year, there will be trail rides, wagon rides, camping, food, a silent auction and live music, with multiple horseback trail rides and horse-drawn wagon rides being the highlight of the weekend.

Many participants camp at the ranch and enjoy a full weekend of activities, including a DJ Friday evening and live music by the Stolen Horses band Saturday evening.

A silent auction tent will operate throughout the weekend, and the event concludes with a pancake breakfast from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The $25-per-person event has raised more than $175,000 since its inception.

“That’s a humbling number,” D Bar D Ranch owner and trail boss Don Beach said.

“The support from our ranch family, our volunteers and the community has been incredible. Cancer affects all of us in one way or another, and it has personally affected us at the ranch. We do this to help other cancer patients, and to thank those at the cancer center who devote their careers to the important work of helping treat patients.”

Ride for a Cure begins at 1 p.m. with a four-hour trail ride at D Bar D Ranch, in Chase.

There also will be a two-hour ride starting at 2 p.m., with multiple wagon rides also leaving at 2 p.m., for those without a horse.

Camp sites are still available for the weekend.

“We’re looking forward to it,” Beach said. “Please come join us.”

Businesses and individuals willing to donate a silent auction item can call the ranch at (231) 832-3143 or drop off the item on site at 6746 East 64th Street, in Chase.
