BIG RAPIDS — Area residents and local veterans can celebrate a day of family fun next month.

The American Legion Post No. 98 is presenting the first Community and Veteran Family Fun Day from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Mecosta County Fairgrounds.

Bill Yontz, commander of the American Legion Post No. 98, said the event was created as a way to bring friends, families and neighbors together for a day of fun.

“All of us veterans took the oath to protect and serve the country, and our service hasn’t ended even though we aren’t active duty. This is just another part of our service,” he said.

Attendees of the event will be able to enjoy a variety of games, raffles, vendor booths, food and more.

Yontz noted while entry to the event is free, there may be minimal costs for food and treats at some vendor booths, but proceeds from the day will be donated to a local veterans organization or family in need.

Although the main event of the day will begin at noon with ceremonies by the American Legion Post No. 98, there also will be a 6-mile ruck march competition starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Teams of four can register to compete in the march through Thursday, Sept. 5.

Yontz said even though there will be many veteran-based organizations at the event, everyone is encouraged to come out for the day.

“I think this is going to be a great community event because this is something to do with kids right in town,” Yontz said. “We want everyone to participate.”

Those interested in being a vendor or volunteering at the event can call Yontz at (810) 599-0324.
