BIG RAPIDS — On Saturday, Aug. 24, downtown Big Rapids will be bursting with activities, music, food and more as part of the annual Big Rapids Summer Fest.

The fest will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. along Michigan Avenue and will have attractions the whole family can enjoy.

At one of the biggest events of the year, many downtown businesses as well as the Big Rapids Fire Department and District Health Department No. 10 will be in attendance, Rick Swinson, chairperson for the event, said.

“Summer Fest is a celebration of summer,” Swinson said. “It’s for people in the community to come together and have fun on the last weekend before school starts.”

Fest attendees can expect to see an aerial performance from Bangarang Circus, a 40-foot rock climbing wall, a downtown scavenger hunt, train rides for kids and more.

Additionally, Balsam Brothers will be performing from noon to 4 p.m. in Pocket Park, and Kilwins will be hosting an ice cream social from 2 to 5 p.m.

“You’ll have free ice cream on one side of the street and music on the other,” Swinson said. “You can’t beat it.”

There also will be food from Phat Matt’s Food Trailer as well as Farmer Bob’s caramel corn.

In partnership with Ferris State University, the event also serves as a way to connect FSU students with the community, Swinson said.

“If it weren’t for Summer Fest, a lot of Ferris students would never make their way downtown,” he said. “This event introduces them to everything Big Rapids has to offer.”

For students wishing to attend the event and see downtown Big Rapids, a shuttle will be provided from 3 to 6 p.m.

Summer Fest gives students and locals a chance to get to know their area businesses while soaking up the last days of summer.

“You can spend your weekend inside where it’s hot and stuffy, or you can come to Summer Fest and check out the downtown businesses,” Swinson said. “I know what I would choose.”
