LEROY — Tony Moore took first place at the prestigious Marquette Invitational and is giving indications this could be quite the season for the Pine River wrestler.

He entered the Marquette Invitational at 6-1. He’s at 119 pounds this year and lost his only match wrestling at 125 against Reed City.

“This kid’s a good wrestler but I expected more out of myself,” Moore said. “My expectations of myself are pretty high. I want to make it further than I did (to state finals) last year.”

Moore qualified for the state meet last season but didn’t place. Placing as high as he can at the state meet is a major goal this season.

“I’m pushing myself in the (wrestling) room, trying to make myself better,” he said. “This should definitely be my best year.”

His top and neutral positions are his strengths, Moore indicated. He wants to improve on his bottom work.

Right now, Moore said he’s wrestling the way he should be.

“I want to keep getting better every day and try to make myself the best I can be for (wrestling at state),” he said.

The Bucks were fifth at the Marquette meet.

“We have a good team this year,” Moore said. “We’re missing some key people from last  year, but we have people to step up. I think we have a pretty good shot this year to go to state.”

Prior to the Marquette tournament, Moore called it an opportunity for his team to get ready for the rest of the season.”

Pine River is off until Saturday when the team wrestles at the St. Louis Invitational.
