Reed City boys fall twice

REED CITY — Trent Sturgell scored 17 points while Zac Saez netted 12 and Cody Kailing added 11 in Reed City’s 60-53 Central State Activities Association Gold Division boys basketball loss to Newaygo on Friday.

Reed City (0-2, 0-1) trailed 41-22 at halftime.

“We battled, but we struggled from the free-throw line,” Reed City coach JJ Eads said. “Turnovers are our biggest problem right now. Newaygo converted our turnovers to points. That’s where the game was lost. We were out-rebounded a little bit, too”

The Coyotes play Friday at Fremont in conference play.

“We’re young, we’re competing,” Eads said. “We’re competing. We have to find a way to win close games.”

Cody Kailing scored 12 points and Sturgell added nine points for Reed City, but it wasn’t enough in a 50-44 non-league loss to host Cadillac on Dec. 6 in the season opener.

It was the Coyote coaching debut for Eads.

Karsten Koopman had seven points and 11 rebounds for Reed City.

From game one to game two, “I think we made progress in certain areas,” Eads said.

Fremont is a new conference opponent and Eads indicated after the Newaygo game he didn’t know too much about the Packers, who opened their season with a win over Chippewa Hills.

This will be the final game for Reed City prior to the holiday break.
