FREMONT  — Reed City’s boys basketball team was bidding for its first win of the season Friday at Fremont in a Central State Activities Association Gold division battle.

But Fremont defeated the Coyotes (0-3, 0-2) 51-33.

Trent Sturgell had eight points, six rebounds and three steals while Karsten Koopman and Cody Kailing scored six points apiece for Reed City.

“It was a game of runs,” Reed City coach JJ Eads said. “We got off to a slow start, but we’re only down by two 14-12, then they had a big second quarter. They went on a run and we could not stop them

“In the third quarter, we came back, and things were looking good and things were going our way. We were getting steals. Fourth quarter, we got looks, but couldn’t make a bucket. We couldn’t buy a bucket. Fremont went on from there.”

Eads has been focusing on a young team with only three returning starters. He’s looking for the holiday break to boost the Coyotes.

“It will be nice for a break over the holidays with vacation,” he said. “We’re young, we’re small relatively quick. We’re battling some other issues. They’re still working hard.”

Reed City comes back on Jan. 6 to play home against Grant, and then has CSAA Gold road games Jan. 10 with Tri County, Jan. 13 with Chippewa Hills and is home Jan. 17 with rival Big Rapids.
