Reed City notches second win at Newaygo

NEWAYGO — Cody Kailing scored 15 points including 12 in the second half to lead Reed City to a 55-38 Central State Activities Association Gold Division victory on Friday over Newaygo.

Brandon Evans had 12 points while Karsten Koopman added 11 points and eight rebounds. Newaygo beat Reed City 60-53 in the season opener.

”I thought it was the best we have played all year,” Reed City coach JJ Eads said.  “We got into foul trouble in the second quarter. Our bench strength gave us a lift.”

The Lions were 6-0 at one stage of the season.

“It was a great team effort,” Eads said. “We held down their best player (Cameron Fisk). This was a good win for us, obviously.”

Reed City is 2-5 in the league.

“I’m proud of the guys and hopefully we can keep the momentum going,” Eads said.

Pine River 52, Reed City 42

LEROY — Mason Powell scored 20 points while Tristen Nelson added 10 and Trenton Holmes had nine in this nonleague win for Pine River (5-3) over Reed City (1-7) on Jan. 24.

Reed City was up 17-13 after the first quarter but trailed 26-24 at halftime. Cody Kailing had 13 points and Brandon Evans 10 for Reed City.

Esiline had 11 rebounds and Powell had 10. Holmes had four assists.

“We picked up the defensive intensity,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said. “In the third quarter especially, I thought our defense was excellent.”

Reed City (2-8, 2-5) was at home against Morley Stanwood on Tuesday.

Reed City is home against Fremont on Friday.
