Manton snaps Pine River winning streak

LEROY — Manton snapped Pine River’s three-game winning streak in a 42-37 Highland Conference girls basketball battle on Thursday.

Manton (4-2,1-1) built an early lead and held back the Bucks in the fourth quarter.

Pine River’s offense struggled in the early going and the Bucks (3-2, 2-1) trailed 11-3 after the first quarter.

“Overall, I was proud of my girls,” Pine River coach Brandon Bowman said. “They came back and played well in the second half.”

Manton hurt the Bucks defense with four 3-pointers in the second quarter. But the Pine River offense started coming to life. Anselma Barnett’s drive for two cut the Manton lead to 28-17 late in the quarter, which is how it stood at halftime.

“We started out strong defensively but we started having a couple of breakdowns that hurt,” Bowman said. “We had a zone and played back. They got into a rhythm and that hurt. We changed into a man and played better.”

Abby Shepler scored at 2:10 and it was 36-21, Rangers. Taylor Hill responded with a basket for Pine River moments later.

It was 38-23 after the third quarter.

Jayden Wilder scored off her own steal to give Manton a 40-24 lead with 5:15 to play. The Bucks started making a run. Chiara Santamaria scored at 3:23 to cut it to 40-31.

KayLee Goodman fouled out with 3:23 to play. Barnett scored twice to make it 41-35 with two minutes to play. Chelsea Wanstead scored for the Bucks to make it 42-37 with 10 seconds to play.

“Our offense was struggling and it took us awhile to keep going,” Bowman said. “But all my girls worked hard up until the game was over.”

Barnett led Pine River with eight points and 16 rebounds. Taylor Hill had seven points and 10 boards. Goodman had seven points.

“Our effort was the best,” Goodman said. “We never gave up and fought the whole time.”
