Pine River volleyball team defeats Ferris

Cayla Trowbridge gets ready to serve for Pine River.

EVART — Evart fired out to an impressive 25-23 first-set volleyball win over Pine River on Sept. 11 in Highland Conference action.

But it was Pine River the rest of the way.

The Bucks took a 3-1 victory by winning games two through four 25-14, 25-11, 25-6.

Emma Whitley had 15 kills, nine digs and four aces while Parker Moores had 11 kills and seven digs, and Sophie Johnson had 32 assists, eight digs and five aces.

“We started out real slow but gained speed as the night went on,” Pine River coach Jana Dennis said. “We are still a work in progress and every time we step on the floor is an opportunity to grow.”

Pine River is 11-7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Highland.

A net error and out-of-bounds play against Pine River gave the Wildcats the winning points in the first game.

Moores had four straight serves for a 22-11 Pine River lead in the second game. Emma Whitley had a kill for the 25th point.

“We tried to get back from our struggle in the first game,” Bucks junior Cayla Trowbridge said. “We had difficulty in pulling our team together and working as one. In the second, third and fourth game, we really improved. The fourth game showed what we could do.”

In the third game, Avery Sumpter had seven straight serves for a 22-11 lead. Whitley had two straight kills and a tip for the final points of the set.

In the fourth set, Johnson served Pine River to a 10-0 lead to open the game, and it was all Bucks from there.

“We started slow but were able to come back,” Dennis said. “We have some things we have to work through. Right now, we just keep working hard and get better every day.”

For the Wildcats, McKenzie Kimball had six kills and seven assists, Angel Porter had five kills and one block, Kara Henry had three kills and three blocks and Livia Hopkins had three kills.
