Pine River nears playoff spot

LEROY — Pine River is one game away from clinching a playoff spot after a 29-14 Highland Conference football win on Friday against visiting Manton for the Bucks homecoming game.

The Bucks led 23-8 at halftime.

Thomas Hooker had the safety for Pine River’s 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Elijah Lewis had a 15-yard scoring run in the first quarter and a 69-yard jaunt in the second. Brock Nelson had a 25-yard scoring run. Omar Aguilar had 38- and 36-yard field goals for the Bucks in the fourth.

The Bucks are 5-2 overall and ended the league at 3-2. They play at Holton on Friday. A sixth win clinches a playoff spot for the Bucks. The regular season ends at Reed City on Oct. 19.

“I thought we played pretty well,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said. “We had kids who came off from bad performances the last couple of weeks and we challenged them to refocus and get the job done and they made a difference for us. It a nice to see them refocus and get the job done Some of those kids played well and made  the difference for us. It was good to see them respond.”

Lewis had 126 yards rushing while Nelson had 98 yards and Luke Hill 72 yards.

Against Holton, also 5-2, “we’re coming off from five competitive tough (Highland) teams we played,” Martin said. “Holton is hoping to get into the playoffs. They have a talented backfield. We’ll have to be disciplined and fly around to the ball to give ourselves a shot.”
