VART — Crossroads Charter Academy had plenty of ammunition in improving its record to 6-1 with an 82-63 non-league boys basketball win over Evart on Monday.

Jackson Wickes had 22 points to lead Crossroads, followed by Britton Angell with 21 points and Ethan Davis with 14.

“It wasn’t one of our best performances, but we came out with a win,” CCA coach Julian Castillo said. “We didn’t trap very well like we should have. We’ll go back tomorrow and work on the things we didn’t do well tonight.”

“We played pretty well in the first half,” Wickes said. “We worked pretty well together. We have a lot to work on.”

Cam Brasington had 18 points for the Wildcats (1-5), followed by Carter Pritchard with 17.

Crossroads was up 18-13 after the first quarter and took control at halftime with a 44-13 lead. Isaac Slomp scored inside for the Cougars to help them to a 65-49 advantage after three. Wickes scored for a 70-47 lead early in the fourth. Evart wouldn’t go away and Pritchard’s 3-pointer make it 70-50. But the Cougars were able to seal the win.

“We turned the ball over too many times on their pressure,” Brasington said. “We only had four turnovers in the second half. The second half was strong.”

“Brit and Jackson played well for us,” Castillo said. “Cody (Carlson) played well for us defensively.”

Donavin Reagan had 14 rebounds and six steals for Evart.

“He’s not very tall but has an inside-outside presence for us,” Evart coach Kris Morgan said. “Cam has performed well for us. He’s performed well at practice.”

Crossroads has a key West Michigan D League game at Pentwater on Thursday

Evart is at Harrison on Tuesday and is home on Thursday against Big Rapids.

Evart, which has lost five straight, fell at home on Wednesday to McBain 56-40.

“We had a slow start but a good second half,” Morgan said. “We need to put together a whole game.”
