VanOrder having solid career at Cornerstone

EVART — She was a talented multi-sport athlete in Evart but now Mara VanOrder is focusing on being a valuable point producer for Cornerstone University’s indoor and outdoor women’s track team.

VanOrder, who also ran cross country and played volleyball at Evart, was also a track all-stater in 2016 in the high jump and 400 meters and in 2015 in the 400.

A junior at Cornerstone, VanOrder has been running sprints for the track team. Her best time has been 27.56 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 1:01.48 in the 400.

“I was part of the qualifying 4×4 (relay) team,” VanOrder said, looking at past highlights. “We ran a time of 3:59 at our national meet for indoor track in Kansas. That was exciting. My hopes for this year is to again qualify in the 4by4 and get under 60 seconds in the 400.”

College sports compared to high school, “is very difficult,” VanOrder said. “We’re in one of the best conferences (Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference). I feel I’ve learned so much more. The natural ability was there.”

But for VanOrder, it was a matter of being able to use her skills to bring out this ability and have a strong collegiate performance.
