Simmons wins regional title

KALKASKA — Reed City’s Ryan Simmons won the 112-pound weight class in the Division 3 regionals on Saturday to advance to the state final on March 1-2 in Detroit.

Simmons (41-4) won his first match by injury default and the next two by pins. He’s undefeated at 112.

“Ryan’s been wrestling since he’s been at 112,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “He has a good season going.”

Austin Fowler (189) was 0-2 for Reed City in the regional.


Evart’s Reese Ransom (140) placed third at the regionals on Saturday to qualify for the state finals on March 1-2 in Detroit. Darrin Gostlin (112) lost in the match he needed to win to qualify.

Pine River

The Bucks will have several wrestlers competing in the state finals on March 1-2 at Ford Field. In the regional on Saturday, Bryan McCurry (285) won his first two matches but lost 7-2 to Jake Renfer of Manton in the title match.

Tim Rizor was 3-0 at 215 for first place. He beat Sam Gilles of Pshpeming Westwood 5-2 in the finals.

Brock Nelson was first at 171 with a 3-0 record. He beat Will Ciske of Mio-Au Sable 9-6 in the finals.

Austin Wuesten (160) lost his title match 5-2 to Andy Dalt of Oscoda. Thomas Hooker lost his third-place match to Jon Carrion of Iron Mountain 5-2. Jordan Koetje (130) lost his first-place match 5-2 to Anthony Ward of Oscoda. Matthew Treiber (112) win his third-place match over Jordan Cebulski of Charlevoix in 2:04.

The Bucks won their team regional and will face Hudson at noon on Friday in a Division 4 team quarterfinal round match. Hudson is seeded No. 3 and Pine River is seeded No. 6.

The final is at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo.
