Pine River wrestlers take second places at state

DETROIT — Two Pine River wrestlers took second place in their respective weight classes on Saturday in the Division 4 state individual finals at Detroit’s Ford Field.

Brock Nelson (171) and Tim Rizor (215) both lost their title matches to settle for second place. Nelson had gone 3-0 but lost his title match to Carson Scroggie of Sand Lake 40-3.

Rizor also won 3-0 then lost in the final match 6-3 to Logan Badge of Clinton.

Bryan McCurry took fourth at 285 after losing his third-place match.

“We had a solid showing with our three placers,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said. “Brian finished his career at Pine River with 150 plus wins and a three-time state placer.

He is the only wrestler to be at four team state meets and four individual meets, which is quite an accomplishment. Brock and Timmy finished are now three-time placers as juniors.

“The other four wrestlers had some tough matches but wrestled well.”

Four wrestlers placed for Chippewa Hills. Mason Hayes was sixth at 140. Bray Haynes fifth at 135, Carson Hayes eighth at 125 and Colby Roosa fifth at 285.

Both Pine River and Chippewa Hills had other wrestlers, who competed but did not place in the top eight for all-state honors.

Reese Ransom of Evart and Ryan Simmons of Reed City also wrestled but did not place.
