Sococki prepares for Pheasants Forever banquet

EVART — Mark Sochocki is getting ready for his Pheasants Forever banquet later this month.

But the Evart area resident and sportsman continues to stay busy with his outdoor activities.

“We’ve been over to Saginaw Bay, I would say, in February, probably four times, and have done pretty well on perch, which we’ve been targeting,” Sochocki said. “(On Feb. 23), we had a really good day on the west side of the bay. The Sunday windstorm (Feb 24) blew the ice out. It’s kind of on hold now. We were chasing perch more than walleye.

“They have been doing well on walleye. We did pretty good one day and caught fish and went out deeper and wound up with some good walleye the end of the day. I like to target perch in the winter. Walleyes seem easier to catch in the summertime and perch are harder, on Saginaw Bay, for me. In the winter, I like to perch fish because they’re in a little close. Sometime it’s difficult to get to the walleye area in the bay with all the cracks.”

Perch fishing, “has been OK,” Sochocki added. “We got them dialed in (two weekends ago). But now the ice is gone where we were fishing. My buddy caught a 14-inch perch, which is big.”

It’s a special year for the Mecosta-Osceola Pheasants Forever chapter.

It’s the 25th year for the banquet which will be on Saturday at the Holiday Inn, 1005 Perry Avenue Big Rapids.

The social hour is at 3:30 followed by the dinner at 6 p.m.

This year’s banquet will feature a selection of guns and wildlife prints. Many unique action items, raffle and door prizes are on hand.

A highlight will be the 25th anniversary Browning 5 gun.

Tickets are NOT available at the door.

Interested persons not able to attend but wanting to be a member can renew their membership by calling Sochocki at 231-734 9826.

Proceeds go toward improving the wildlife habitat.
