Beilfuss new girls basketball coach

REED CITY — Tim Beilfuss was appointed the new Reed City girls basketball coach a few months ago and has had a chance to work with his girls during the summer.

The Coyotes had a scrimmage at home on Thursday against Evart.

Beilfuss had been assistant coach under Brian Koopman, who resigned after handling the post for 24 years.

So far for the Coyotes, it’s been a busy summer.

“We’ve had a lot of practices,” Beilfuss said. “We’ve had short numbers. We were able to play 5-on-5 for the first time Tuesday and we started the beginning of June.”

He’s had some players out with injuries.

Beilfuss was varsity assistant the last two years.

He also was the freshman girls coach, and spent two years as JV girls coach and two years as boys JV skipper.

Belfuss is a local native. He grew up in Baldwin and went to Reed City. He graduated in 2001.

He earned basketball all-conference honors.

“I’ve always wanted to run a varsity program,” Beilfuss said. “I’ve been a lower level coach for almost 10 years. The girls know me from last year.”

Assistant coaches are Emma Lockhart and Brian Hammond on the varsity.

“We’re trying to get ex-players back into the program,” Beilfuss said. “We’re trying to get more people involved and get more kids out.”

Beilfuss said he’s overhauling everything with the program.

“When you try to change a culture it’s not an overnight thing,” he said. “Every day, you preach what your values are.”

There’s also a camp set for Onekama where the Coyotes will play 5 to 7 games.

Evart coach Matt Tiedt is also a first-year skipper.

“We’ve got a lot to work on and we had a few girls missing,” Tiedt said. “I gave the younger girls some time. It was good. This will probably be the end of it for a little while. We’ll probably co-op with the volleyball team for conditioning.”
