Lake City hunter eyes bigger bucks

By

BALDWIN– Jeremy Bonnett loves his hunting. It’s been 25 years and it’s not over yet.

Bonnett lives northwest of Reed City in Lake County. As of last week, he said he’s been out hunting “but I’m not seeing a lot.”

His bow hunting season netted him an 8-point buck and Bonnett made a 25-yard shot.

Bonnett started hunting when he was 12 and is now 37. He recalls a 9-point that he shot at one time in the Bitely area.

“They’re bigger this year, we’ve noticed,” he said. “I think that’s because of an easy winter and they made it through pretty good. They grew good horns. We just can’t find them right now.”

Small game hunting also draws Bonnett’s fancy.

“I’ve seen a lot of partridge this year,” he said.

A full-time carpenter, Bonnett enjoys hunting every opportunity he gets.

“I’m going to Iowa hunting for deer,” he said. “They’re so much bigger out of state.”

But while he’s celebrating 25 years of hunting, Bonnett still has that one special hunt he hasn’t made yet that he’d like to take some day.

“I’d like to go black bear hunting in Michigan,” he smiled.
